Professional experience
Reinout van Riel has been a member of the Executive Board of Hamburg Commercial Bank since November 2025. He assumed the role of Chief Risk Officer on January 1, 2026, and is responsible for the bank’s risk management. Previously, he was CRO and Deputy CEO of NIBC Bank/NIBC Holding from August 2016 to March 2025. In this role, he shaped the strategic development of the institution, chaired risk and investment committees, and guided the bank through its IPO, acquisition by Blackstone, and numerous M&A processes.
From July 2013 to August 2016, Reinout van Riel served as Chief Portfolio Officer and member of the Executive Board at Propertize,
where he was responsible for the restructuring and successful sale of the portfolio. Prior to that, he gained extensive international experience in various management positions at the Royal Bank of Scotland and ABN AMRO, including as Head of Credit Portfolio Management for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland in Frankfurt, as well as in senior positions in Amsterdam, Brussels, and Utrecht.
In addition to his operational activities, Reinout van Riel is involved in various supervisory and advisory boards. He is fluent in German, English, and Dutch and is known for his analytical and team-oriented leadership style. His focus is on sustainability.
