Professional experience
Luc Popelier has been Chief Executive Officer since September 2024. Prior to joining HCOB, he worked for KBC for 31 years. KBC is a large bank insurer based in Brussels with leading positions in retail, private banking, SME and corporate banking in Belgium and a number of Central European countries. For several years, Luc was Group Financial Officer (CFO) and member of the Executive Committee of the KBC Group. Luc started his career in corporate banking at Kredietbank in 1988. In 1995, he joined Warburg Dillon Read in London as Associate Director of Credit Risk Management and progressed to Director of Corporate Finance in the Leveraged Finance Group of SBC Warburg. In 1999, Luc joined KBC Securities as Executive Director of Corporate Finance.
Three years later he became General Manager of Strategy and Expansion at KBC Group and served as General Manager of the Trade Finance Division at KBC Bank in 2008. In 2009, he became a member of the Executive Committee of KBC Asset Management. In that same year he joined the Group Executive Committee of KBC Group as CEO of the Market Activities of the Merchant Banking Business Unit. Luc Popelier was appointed Group Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in 2011, a role he held until 2017 when he became CEO of the International Markets Business Unit of KBC Group. He resumed his role as Group CFO in 2021. He was born in Wilrijk, Belgium and graduated from the University of Antwerp with a Master’s degree in Applied Economics.
