Green hydrogen
Is tomorrow’s energy source bankable?
About the whitepaper
Green hydrogen will play a major role in the transition to a low-carbon economy. Its advantage: it provides CO2-neutral energy for numerous applications in industry, transport, the energy and the building sector. In terms of the desired decarbonization, this makes green hydrogen particularly attractive for industrial processes and economic sectors in which the necessary reduction of CO2 emissions is difficult to achieve.
The EU is aiming to increase the consumption of hydrogen from renewable energies to 20 million tons (Mt) by 2030. Energy-intensive industries that have so far relied primarily on fossil resources and are difficult to decarbonize are to meet their needs in the future with CO2-neutral energy sources. To achieve this, production must increase significantly, with the EU itself aiming to produce around half of the targeted 20 Mt.
In our white paper “Green Hydrogen: Is Tomorrow’s Energy Source Bankable?”, we explore the prospects for green hydrogen and the conditions that need to be met to make hydrogen projects bankable
Key Insights
-
Green hydrogen as a beacon of hope
The transformation to a climate-neutral industry in Europe is essential to overcoming the climate crisis. Green hydrogen, in particular, is expected to drive the industrial transformation and meet the future demand of various sectors, such as steel, cement and chemicals.
-
Focus on local production and consumption
The initial focus could be on the local production and use of green hydrogen. The necessary infrastructure, such as pipelines or storage locations, is to be created in Europe by 2030, which should accelerate the expansion of green hydrogen production.
-
The financial challenges
A focused view on near-term investment projects, early identification and mitigation of challenges and risks, and a clear regulatory framework are the driving prerequisites for successful financing of green hydrogen.
